Welcome to my Lacuna Coil shrine!

Greetings! I'm glad you've found your way here, to the place where we fear nothing! Lacuna Coil is my favorite band of all time, and I've been a fan since I was 14 years old, after hearing "Swamped" and "Heaven's a Lie" from their 2002 album Comalies. Read on to find out more about the band and why I love them so much.

Who are Lacuna Coil?

Hailing from Milan, Italy, the band consists of vocalist Cristina Scabbia, vocalist Andrea Ferro, bassist Marco "Maki" Coti Zelati, and drummer Richard Meiz. They've gone through a few lineup changes over the years, including quite recently, and their new guitarist is currently a mystery (I'm waiting with bated breath!). At their core, they're gothic metal, but their sound has evolved over the years and become heavier, with Andrea's vocals transitioning from clean singing to growls.

I got into them in 2002, but they became my top favorite band around 2016 when Delirium was released and their new heavier sound became a staple. I love the interplay between Cristina's clean vocals and Andrea's growls as well as the death metal influence and progressive elements running through the music. I was really happy when the band released Comalies XX in 2022, a re-recorded version of the original album with the songs re-worked to fit their new sound. Don't get me wrong, I still love the old Lacuna Coil, and songs like "Falling Again" from their first album are among my favorites, but I'm pleased with the direction they've taken and it's been great to experience how they've grown over the years.

My Favorite LC Album

My love for Lacuna Coil was already set in stone when Delirium was released in 2016, but that's when I truly fell head over heels for their music. They had been experimenting with a heavier sound on their previous albums, but Delirium is when that sound really took off. The entire album had a gothic-mixed-with-death feel, and songs like "You Love Me 'Cause I Hate You" featured intriguing progressive elements. Cristina's vocals soared while Andrea's remained grounded in growls, and the lyrics touched on themes like grief, depression, and regret.

Delirium helped get me through a major transition period in my life, a time when everything was unsure and shaky. Every song on the album means the world to me, because they all helped me during one of my darkest times. It's actually very hard for me to pick a favorite since they all mean so much! Here's my attempt at a top 5, though:

  1. "Downfall" - My all-time favorite LC song, even though it's one of their softer ones. It features a guitar solo by Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, another favorite band of mine.

  2. "Blood, Tears, Dust" - This song feels magical due to the "immortality spell" lyrics and the soaring chorus. It makes me feel a bit witchy when I listen to it.

  3. "You Love Me 'Cause I Hate You" - Probably one of their most progressive songs to date. I'm in love with the drums on this track.

  4. "Live to Tell" - A cover of a Madonna song! LC did a fantastic job of turning this pop gem into a heavy anthem.

  5. "Ghost in the Mist" - I love the absolute punch in the face that is the opening of this song. Also a big fan of the riffs and the orchestral chorus.

My Top 10 LC Songs

Since I already covered Delirium in the previous section, I'm not including songs from that particular album in this list. You can just assume that it's on a level above these top 10 favorites. The list below is subject to change upon release of new music.

  1. "Reckless" - An absolute banger of a track with a super catchy chorus. Cristina really showcases her range here.

  2. "Heaven's a Lie XX" - My original favorite LC song in its perfected form. I love Cristina's deep vocals on the verses and the interplay between Cristina and Andrea on the chorus.

  3. "Hosting the Shadow" - Their newest single as of this writing, it features vocals by Lamb of God's Randy Blythe that work perfectly on this dark and heavy track.

  4. "Apocalypse" - I love this one because the lyrics feel relevant, and it's one of those melodies that gets stuck in my head for days.

  5. "Trip the Darkness" - My favorite track from Dark Adrenaline. It feels very lyrical and is just beautifully arranged.

  6. "Without Fear" - The guitars on this softer track are mesmerizing. It has a bit of a shoegaze-y feel to it.

  7. "Bad Things" - They released this as a Halloween song, and it definitely has that vibe.

  8. "Senzafine" - This song has a horror-film-esque synth line running through it, and I adore the chorus. It's also nice to hear them singing in Italian! (I prefer the refined version of this song on Unleashed Memories to the original EP version.)

  9. "Spellbound" - This song has a bit of a punk edge to it. It's one of their classic songs from the more gothic metal era.

  10. "I Burn in You" - LC has this penchant for soaring ballads, and this is one of them. Andrea's verses accompanied by Cristina's backing vocals are probably my favorite part.

Live Experience

I had the life-changing opportunity to see Lacuna Coil live in May of 2024. After years of planning to see them but it never working out for one reason or another, it felt like a long time coming. My partner and I had a great spot close to the stage, and it was a fantastic experience. At the end of the show, I managed to catch Maki's bass pick that he threw into the crowd! It's now one of my most prized possessions. I was having way too much fun to take photos, but here are just a few:
